Inaugural Citizen of the Year 2008 Award :
On Thursday 18th December 2008, Beaumaris Community Bank in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Beaumaris, was pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural Citizen of the Year 2008 Award - Ms. Janine Chugg, President of the Beaumaris Theatre Group.
The Award is to recognise an outstanding local resident who has made a substantial contribution to the people of Beaumaris and/or the broader Community. Greg Every, of Beaumaris Rotary, commented that Janine, a long-time resident of Beaumaris, is an especially fitting winner as her efforts over many years to establish and develop the Beaumaris Theatre Group have seen it grow by leaps and bounds. In particular this has been a source of engagement with many younger members of the community. Beaumaris Theatre Group currently enjoys an enviable reputation as one of the most dynamic theatre groups in suburban Melbourne.
Pictured is Phil McConnell, Chairman of the Beaumaris Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank presenting Janine Chugg with her Citizen of the Year 2008 Award and a cheque for $1,500 in the form of a savings account deposit with the Beaumaris Community Bank.
Congratulations Janine!
The success of this year’s Award and the high standard of nominations received, has prompted the organisers to make the Award an annual one.
Beaumaris Football Club welcomes exciting new, senior coach – Jason Mifsud, who has come to us after 7 years as captain and coach of Koroit near Warnambool.
He has also been engaged in coach support roles in AFL at St Kilda in 2006 and the Bulldogs in 2007.
The Club enters an exciting new era with the Oak Street ground having substantial refurbishments.
As a result, in 2008, all teams have had to play and train elsewhere for the Season. The 2009 Season, with the completed resurfacing of the ground, looks set to be very successful.
Beaumaris FC is the highest ranked ‘community based’ football club in the Victorian Amateur Football Association [VAFA] and puts 20 Junior teams on the field each week, involving over 400 young players.

At the Annual General Meeting of Beaumaris Cricket Club on Wednesday, 4th June, 2008, Tony Mellick was re-elected as President and Grant Earney as Vice President for 2008-2009.
It was proposed and agreed-to that a 5th X1 side be introduced and begin playing this next 2008/2009 season.
The Oak Street Oval upgrade (resurfacing) has gone to plan and was just about ready for Round 1 of the cricket season.
Because Council has stated that it cannot help with funding for the upgrade/relocation of nets the Cricket Club is looking into other ways of achieving this which may involve sponsorship and working bees.

The location is the Beaumaris Community Centre Tennis Club. They gather every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Their love of tennis ignores the effects of age.
Whilst time may have slowed them slightly, their skills are still evident for all to see. Sharp volleys, deft drop shots and strategically placed lobs are common; seering aces and heaving forehands less so these days. Back in the day, their prematch routine involved a few stretches and a few laps. Now the build up to the game is about strapping dodgy knees, ankles and elbows.
As well as the tennis, the mid-week men’s league is also a social event. It is a time to catch up with likeminded peers in a convivial and social atmosphere. Most players are club members, but social players from the area are more than welcome to come down for a hit and join in the fun.
The Beaumaris Community Centre Tennis Club is not just about old mates running around. There are mixed and ladies social fixtures, as well as night tennis. The club is also represented in regional competitions.
Even more exciting is the vibrant junior program, headed by TCAV accredited coach Sarah Webster. Saturday and Sunday mornings are buzzing with children. They are out and about exercising and having fun whilst mum and dad watch on with a keen eye. Joining a tennis club can enhance all aspects of a childs life.
“They learn about team work, fair play, get plenty of exercise and most importantly have heaps and heaps of fun,” says Webster.
“Children are being active, learning social skills, problem solving, being patient, honest and fair and working in a team environment. All of these skills will help them in all future aspects of their lives.”
Tennis is one of the few truly global sports, and can be played socially and competitively in nearly every country in the world. And, as shown at the Beaumaris Community Centre Tennis Club, it can be played by all ages.
